Date 28th February 2000 Renaissance Cruises have diverted today's scheduled visit by their cruise ship "R2" to Tangier following refusal by Spain to allow the vessel to sail to Gibraltar from a Spanish port or to a Spanish port from Gibraltar. Cruise ships have been sailing directly between Gibraltar and Spanish ports for many years. The Spanish action therefore represents an additional, unjustifiable and unlawful measure of harrassment designed to undermine the economy of Gibraltar. The Gibraltar Government has emphasised to the British Government the need for an immediate resolution of this problem, as well as the inevitable wider consequences and repercussions generally of this measure. The Gibraltar Government is in contact with HMG on this mattrer on a continual basis. The Gibraltar Government is considering its options and will await today's diplomatic developments before making a further statement. |
